Callum Morse

Image
Callum Morse- Callum Morse takes various surf related images but i am going to focus on his slow shutter seascape images as sown above. In these images he demon straights the use of line, this is shown through the motion blur of the waves horizontally across the image. The colors he uses are very complementary as he uses various tones of blues contrasting against the oranges and pinks from the sunset. the warm tones of the sky contrast against the cool tones of the sea. The texture of these images is very smooth as the slow shutter speed completely smooth out the waves. i would like to capture the reflections of the sunset similar to how Callum Morse did in the photo on the right. The light of the images is quite bright but not very direct as these are taken at evening/ dawn. The images look as if they have has basic manipulation through editing (brightness, contrast and little but of saturation). There has not been any lighting used in these images as they are taken outdoors ...

Magazine and article

Image
Planning for writing an article- I have decided to create an article and magazine based off some of my recent shoots. I combined my favourite photos from recent shoots and wrote an article about social medias effect on surfing and how it has changed over the past few years. This is the process of making the mag and article.. Magazine layout experiments/plan- Ideas- This is my draft of the layout go my magazine for this project. I really like the layout of it so far I think it works really effectively. The layering of photos works well and I like the text and how it relates to the story told in the photos. In this photo above I experimented with different layouts using some images from shoot already and some previous photos to test what compositions look best together. I think layering photos together looks really effective and using contrasting colours layered together. I also like the layering of text over images, especially white text on a darker background. I find...

Shoot 5

Image
Shoot plan- In this first shoot I am focusing on capturing a slow shutter surf photos which captures the movement and style of the surfer. I decided to take this photo because I think it will show Cornwall's talent of surfers snd beauty of the waves. For this shoot I aim to capture an image which portrays the story I would like to tell, editorial photos need to be able to 'say a thousand words through a single image' so I aim to portray that through this image. The techniques I am going to use are slow shutter speed which I have worked on in my other shoots and they have all came out really effectively. I would like to experiment with shooting at different lights- sunset and morning light. I would like the shoot to portray images which have a really pleasing colour scheme (bright blues and whites) as this will work well with the other images aesthetically. This li...

Shoot 4

Image
Shoot plan- The idea behind this shoot was to work in inspiration from Woody Gooch, I wanted to focus on capturing abstract images from unique compositions. I wanted to look at surf scenes from a different angle to capture a unique photo. I am intending to experiment with slow shutter speed and a 75-300mm lens so I can try to capture super close up perspectives. I have previously tried to capture slow Sutter images but always wanted to get a super close up of longboard cross stepping- the focus being on the surfers feet while the movement is blurred around them. This will be my aim for this shoot swell as using slow shutter on landscapes to obscure the figures walking out. My photos will work aesthetically by creating a set of 3 which match together, with similar colour schemes. I have previously conducted a shoot in inspiration from Woody Gooch which turned out effectively howe...

Shoot 3

Image
Shoot plan-  In this shoot i am looking to capture the motion of the sea and the speed of the waves in inspiration from Callum Morse. I think it is a really successful way to show a sunset and the waves which is shown from a different point of view. By using a slow shutter speed to create these images it will create a really interesting motion blur effect. I am intending to use a slow shutter speed and then experiment with using a tripod and using free hand to create this blur effect. From the past i have tried to create similar photos and have found that using free hand and take the photograph as i am moving side ways works really effectively and creates a very abstract photo. I would like to take a series of photos at sunset/ sunrise to capture the beautiful orange/ pink colors behind, to incorporate similar colors that Callum Morse uses. I would like to incorporate the complementary colors into my work through blue and ...

Shoot 2

Image
Shoot plan- The ideas behind this shoot was to focus on reflections and contrasting light and dark areas.  I wanted to capture photos that have strong atmospheres and emotion. I wanted to include techniques inspired by Woody Gooch using different unique compositions from different angles and capturing strong emotion. After looking at his photos of reflection creating eerie atmosphere it inspired me to do this shoot base doff that. Capturing photos that look abstract or unique is really effective and would fit well with my work, I can do this by using techniques such as slow shutter and cropping the image close. I have previously done a shoot in inspiration from woody gooch which turned out effectively so I wanted to expand on the skills I have now developed and re do the shoot. My shoot will take 1 hour to set up and conduct the shoot as I will have little equipment. I will not be using models, my subjects will be random figures who are in the correct position for the ref...

Woody Gooch

Image
Woody Gooch- I have chosen Woody Gooch to research into as his moody black and white photos which emit great emotion and feeling which inspires me. For example the photo at the bottom, such stillness yet a lonesome vibe is created in this photo. This photo is really inspiring and is something I would like to portray in my work. I will shoot lots of black and white as well as colour to see the difference.  Woody Gooch is a abstract surf photographer based around the world. He captures amazing abstract photographs featuring surf and landscape capturing waves from all landscapes, using in water and out water photography. Each of his photos portray different atmospheres, he plays around with light and dark and some black and white. He creates intense atmospheres in each of his photos by using composition, light and shadows.  In my personal investigation I will be working on action/ seascape photography in inspiration from Woody Gooch. I would like to put his elemen...

Stephan Shore

Image
Stephan Shore is an American photographer who explores photography in snapshots. He creates his work in the form of a visual  diary, where he captures his own experiences and surroundings through photographs. He is very talented in using light and composition to evoke emotion and feeling in his work.  In Stephan Shore's series 'American Surfaces' he explores snapshot photography and how colour film can capture natural beauty and atmosphere of a small towns in America. He captures images in their natural state, very spontaneously rather than making the pictures staged and planned. He followed the 'snapshot aesthetic' in his set of photographs and explores how no matter what is being photographed it is always photography itself. He turned everyday objects into beautiful photos and looked to see photographic possibility in everything. He is very casual when taking his photographs yet looks for the perfect composition. Stephan Shore used a 8 by 10 viewfind...

Hugh Holland

Image
Hugh Holland artist research  Hugh Holland is an influential skate photographer who captured the unique style of Californian skaters in the 70's. Starting skate photography in 1975 he captured the famous z-boys which was just the beginning of skateboarding as a sport. Hugh used canon film cameras and 35mm film to capture the grainy, retro look in a soft quality. He captures skaters carving drainage ditches and empty pools, his favourite subject is the figure- you can see how he focuses on the skaters body shape as the momentum and speed moves them. The beauty and grace of skating is shown throughout his images, most prominent in his black and white stills. In these images the pictorial space is shallow as the figure is close and the main focus with mostly pain background, there isn't any layering of the foreground or overlapping of objects. The use of shadow anchors the figure and adds contrast to the image. There is no sense of scale in these images as the figu...
