Statement of intent

Statement of intent- My personal investigation is about surf and skate culture and looking into its role and significance in Cornwall. I have chosen this theme because it is something I am really passionate about. From growing up in St Ives I have constantly been surrounded by talented surfers, skaters and photographers who have always inspired me to love surf photography. My project will be personal to me as I will be capturing places where I have grown up and documenting the local surf community.  I will be looking at a mixture of photographers and film makers most who are local to the areas. For example surf photographers from Cornwall such as Nick Pumphrey, Megan Hemsworth, Toby butler, Katie Rae, Calin Jones, Alias Babnik, Woody Gooch and Perry Gershkow.  Local film makers such as Seth Hughes will inspire my videography process. To show development of my ideas I will be experimenting with new techniques I haven't tried before such a...

Filming Experiments

Experimenting filming around my garden- While in self isolation I decided to practise filming on my canon 7d, I have not filmed before is it was good to get used to the settings. I found it difficult to keep the camera still as I didn't have a tripod so the footage came out bit wobbly. I used iMovie to edit the clips together which worked out quite effectively, it was easy to edit on however I will be learning to use adobe premier when back in collage to learn techniques such as  colour correction, sound and editing clips together smoothly.  I used manual focus which worked well in blurring the background and focusing on the foreground. I am very pleased with how this little short clip has turned out and can't wait to experiment filming surfing. To improve I would use a tripod to make the movement smooth. Clips from last summer-              These 2 clips were taken last summer when I first found ...

Shoot 1

Image
Shoot plan- For this shoot I will be shooting skate on 35mm film, this will include me shooting around the skatepark capturing the local skaters. I have decided to this because it links in my theme following surf and skate photography. My idea is to shoot stills using a vintage canon film camera around the skate park, I would like to experiment with shadows and natural lighting. I would also like to experiment with different lenses, a 75mm and 75mm fish eye with different filters so alter the colours of the shot. Using colour and black and white film will give me a variety of images. I am going to focus on capturing motion at the correct time and also composition of the photos, to use shadows on the curves of the skatepark and plain backgrounds like the sky to highlight the skater. I would like my photos to follow similar colour scheme as a set to work aesthetically together (do one shoot in colour and one in black and white). I would like to shoot in a bright sunny day to get lots...

Videography inspiration

Image
For my personal investigation I would like to explore videography and filming surfing. This is something I have not done before and is an idea I would like to incorporate into my personal investigation. I have watched many surfing clips and feel very inspired by the way filters capture style and lifestyle footage which combined makes compelling story. Some of these clips are made locally to me (mike lay is a local surfer in Sennen) which are really amazing clips and show the potential Cornwall has for filming and its uniques waves/ landscapes. These are some clips which I am inspired by: Sonic Souvenirs , Mike February  A road through Galicia, Luke Pilbeam featuring mike lay Road to the high-line, featuring Mike Lay Cynevin By Seth Hughes featuring Mike Lay Oscar Langburne, dancing barefoot In all of these clips they capture the ultimate style of surfing. These clips all really inspire me to create something similar, following a surfer and the lifestyle. The editing ...

Picture inspiration-

Image
Pinterest board- These are images which I have collected through Pinterest which inspire me for my personal investigation. The range of photos work really well together (portraits, skating, surfing, landscape and lifestyle photos) which are all ideas I would like to explore further in this project. The colour scheme created through these images also really inspires me (light cool hues complemented against bold bright warm colour and high contrast black and white images). The range of compositions and techniques works really effectively to create a range of photos which are all unique.

Surf and skate culture

Image
Pinterest  board on surf and skate culture- As I have chosen my theme to be surf and skate culture I decided to look into posters and photos which represent that. They have really inspired me in capturing unique style and talent of there's surfers/ skaters. For my personal investigation I will focus on capturing true style in various compositions and different cameras to experiment with different outcomes.
