Calin Jones Photography

Image
Calin Jones- Calin Jones is a film photographer based in California. He takes candid black and white images of figures, surfing and skating.  The ideas are to take candid photos at a skate park in St Ives and using shadows and contrast to make the image more interesting. I will focus on the figures of the skater and the interesting shapes the body makes. Capturing the figure frozen in the movement, speed and momentum of skating. The contrast in these images created by shooting in  bright sunlight to create abstract shadows is really effective in making the image more interesting. I find the shadows created around the bowl of the skatepark and the ledges is really interesting as it adds depth to the photo and make unique compositions.  He includes relationships with adjacent objects to create a sense of scale, for example in the skatepark he includes a human form to show the large scale of the ramp compared. He shoots on black and white...

Hiroshi Sugimoto

Image
Hiroshi Sugimoto- 'Hiroshi Sugimoto (*1948 in Tokyo) is considered one of the best-known photo artists of our time. He came to be known for his  strictly black-and-white, highly stylized photography series . ... They pose fundamental questions on the relationship between photography and time, art and science, imagination and reality.' 'Central to Sugimoto's work is the idea that photography is  a time machine, a method of preserving and picturing memory and time . This theme provides the defining principle of his ongoing series, including "Dioramas" (1976–), "Theatres" (1978–), and "Seascapes" (1980–).'

Experimenting with graphic design

Image
Graphic Design Inso- Annotations- For the next part of my project I will be looking at incorporating photos with graphic design/ illustration and printing it out. I chose to do this because I think it will add extra to the photos and I would like to incorporate more colour into plainer images.  First experiments using other peoples designs- Evaluation- These editing came out very effectively. I like the contrast between black and white images and bright colour.

Callum Morse

Image
Callum Morse- Callum Morse takes various surf related images but i am going to focus on his slow shutter seascape images as sown above. In these images he demon straights the use of line, this is shown through the motion blur of the waves horizontally across the image. The colors he uses are very complementary as he uses various tones of blues contrasting against the oranges and pinks from the sunset. the warm tones of the sky contrast against the cool tones of the sea. The texture of these images is very smooth as the slow shutter speed completely smooth out the waves. i would like to capture the reflections of the sunset similar to how Callum Morse did in the photo on the right. The light of the images is quite bright but not very direct as these are taken at evening/ dawn. The images look as if they have has basic manipulation through editing (brightness, contrast and little but of saturation). There has not been any lighting used in these images as they are taken outdoors ...

Magazine and article

Image
Planning for writing an article- I have decided to create an article and magazine based off some of my recent shoots. I combined my favourite photos from recent shoots and wrote an article about social medias effect on surfing and how it has changed over the past few years. This is the process of making the mag and article.. Magazine layout experiments/plan- Ideas- This is my draft of the layout go my magazine for this project. I really like the layout of it so far I think it works really effectively. The layering of photos works well and I like the text and how it relates to the story told in the photos. In this photo above I experimented with different layouts using some images from shoot already and some previous photos to test what compositions look best together. I think layering photos together looks really effective and using contrasting colours layered together. I also like the layering of text over images, especially white text on a darker background. I find...
