Stephan Shore

Stephan Shore is an American photographer who explores photography in snapshots. He creates his work in the form of a visual diary, where he captures his own experiences and surroundings through photographs. He is very talented in using light and composition to evoke emotion and feeling in his work. In Stephan Shore's series 'American Surfaces' he explores snapshot photography and how colour film can capture natural beauty and atmosphere of a small towns in America. He captures images in their natural state, very spontaneously rather than making the pictures staged and planned. He followed the 'snapshot aesthetic' in his set of photographs and explores how no matter what is being photographed it is always photography itself. He turned everyday objects into beautiful photos and looked to see photographic possibility in everything. He is very casual when taking his photographs yet looks for the perfect composition. Stephan Shore used a 8 by 10 viewfinder camera when shooting 'American Surfaces' with a flash which created intense colour in his photos. I aspire to capture images in the style of Stephan Shore, by using 35mm film and snapshotting scenes using in-depth composition and lighting. As my theme is surf and skate culture I will be incorporating this lifestyle into the photos. As I live in Cornwall there are endless opportunities to capture the surf lifestyle in candid photographs.

I want to link this to my personal investigation looking at surf and skate culture by taking snapshots capturing the lifestyle on 35mm film.
